How to Win At Visual Content Marketing With Your Own Photos

October 5, 2017 by Cindy Wieting

As much as we hate to admit it, appearance is everything. We are visually stimulated and our brains can decipher an image instantly compared with reading text. When it comes to web copy, people rarely read a piece of content word for word. On the other hand, images stick with readers longer and are more likely to give you a greater return on your content investment.

As a small business owner you or your team should be taking pictures regularly and maximizing the value of each image to boost your visual content marketing.

Why should you take and use your own pictures in your marketing?

The internet is packed with images and most of the time you can find a picture of exactly what you need, so why should you go through the effort of taking your own? Because chances are that image has been used over and over again and possibly by your competitors. A personal image boosts your trust factor and allows your audience to relate to you and your business faster. If the stock photo you’re using is at all similar to another website that created a negative experience for the visitor, subconsciously, they’re projecting their negative experiences onto your stock photograph, reducing trust & adding friction to the process. In marketing studies, when visitors see real images they are 35% more likely to sign up and make a purchase. Think about it this way: if someone asks to “be your friend” on your personal Facebook account, or requests to follow you on Twitter and the only images they have available are cat pictures, or an image of a celebrity, are you going to accept their request? Chances are most people won’t unless they are pretty sure that they know this person. Otherwise there is no telling who is really on the other side of the computer. If you are dead set on using a stock photo, go to Google Images and drag the photo in the search bar and Google will pull up all the of the exact instances of that photo so you can see who else is using that image.

Need some ideas for the types of pictures to take?

  • Showcase your facilities
  • Show Before and After Images
  • Ask your best customers if they would be willing to take a photo with you
  • Photograph people in your business enjoying your product
  • Capture behind the scenes moments
  • Share team photos

Where can you use these images in your marketing?

Everywhere! You don’t need to be a professional photographer to create captivating images, and you don’t need a fancy camera. Make sure your phone has at least an 8mp camera and start snapping some photos. As you get comfortable, play with the lighting and angles to help you share your story. Afterall, that’s all marketing is is telling a story and having your audience buy in.

  • You can use your images on your website.
  • Use your images in your blogs
  • Use your images on your social media accounts

Every visual you create should be simple which in turn will make it easier for repurposing. Think about the longevity of your visuals and keep in mind where it could be used after its initial purpose. We’re not saying these images should replace a professional photographer, but if you don’t have a budget yet or your main focus is social media – a camera phone is all you need to get by.

How do you maximize the value of each image in your marketing plan?

The great part about images is they are evergreen and will always be useful, even the outdated ones will be great for a #ThrowbackThursday post now and then. Create a folder of images that you can pull from over a period of time. Save them all in a place where you and your team can easily access the photos when you need them, like Google Drive or similar cloud storage location.

To recycle images more than once you can:

  1. Add text overlays like your favorite quote or a testimonial
  2. Use a filter and share the image again.
  3. Create a collage using multiple images
  4. Crop the photo for a new angle
  5. Turn your visuals into infographics
  6. Create a video slideshow with apps on your phone

You’re not going to become a professional photographer overnight. But with more high quality cameras in our phones and editing apps available on the market, it’s easier than ever to take great images of your business. So don’t be afraid to try something new! As you gain new skills, your visual content marketing photos will get better and better. And, no matter what, any images you share of your products and business will be better than no images at all or a stock photo that doesn’t inspire.

How Important Is Your Website Footer?

July 20, 2017 by Cindy Wieting

Your website’s footer is as important as designing the header.

Your footer is at the bottom of your website and it will appear on every page, yet we’ve seen footers that clearly look like an afterthought. A great website designer knows designing a footer is equally important as the header and other elements throughout the homepage.

Why is your footer so important?

It’s the only section where you can mention important pages, special offers, social media, and subscription opt in all in one concise space.

Navigation: Visitors who can’t find what they’re looking for or are trying to find a specific page, for example ‘About us’ or ‘Customer service’, often have a look at the footer.

Provide information: Your visitors expect to find specific information in the footer, including your contact details and general terms & conditions.

Branding: Use your brand-style colors and (once again) include your logo and social-media buttons to boost visitors’ connection with your store.

The Anthropologie footer, is informational and leads the user to the important pages of the site, consistent branding, social media links and has a promotional statement for all to see.

Due to the footer being displayed globally across the website, you want a mixture of search engine friendly content and user friendly content.

What Should Your Website Footer Contain?

Contact details – This column is probably the only one solely designed for the user rather than search engines. Other than the ‘Contact us’ page, the header and footer are the two main places where a user would look for contact details, whether it be an e-mail address, e-mail contact form, map or telephone/fax number.

Social Media – Almost all websites include social media buttons tucked away either in one of the top corners or at the bottom of the page. The advantage of putting it into a footer or sidebar is that it can easily be replicated and stays on each page at the same place, so that the user doesn’t need to go hunting for it. While most people put only buttons from Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and a couple of others, there is also growing popularity for some newer names. With the advent of plugins for social media buttons, it is even easier to integrate a whole set of buttons in a couple of clicks.

Newsletter Signup – This is possibly your last chance to make contact with your visitor before they leave, you want to make sure you have a way to contact them in the future. Offering a newsletter sign up is a great way to build your email list. Remember, very rarely does a consumer make a purchase on the first contact, it often takes 4-5 interactions before they decide to do business with you.

Keep it simple and organized.

There is obviously no ready-made answer to exactly what your footer should look like, but it should be representative of your brand and include the basics we mentioned above. It all boils down to what your website is about and what content goes on it.

What Is Your Branding Saying About You and Why It Matters?

April 26, 2017 by Cindy Wieting

Have you ever heard a catchy slogan or jingle on the radio? I’m sure you can recall a flooring jingle or a plumber’s tune. These are examples of strong branding that creates recognition in your community. Branding also allows you to connect with your audience and advertising can be tailored to target your ideal customers. In a business climate where the Internet, social media, and technology create a lot of static, it’s crucial to develop a clear voice and message for your business to help cut through the noise. It also has to be memorable. Your brand is the focus of all your marketing efforts. People have too many choices and too little time; the last thing you want to do is follow the beaten path.

What Does Your Branding Say About Your Company?

  • What does your business do so well that a customer would choose you over your competitors, or even pay more for your product or service?
  • Do you have a great deal of experience in your industry?
  • Do you pride your company on an excellent customer experience?

These types of differentiating factors are building blocks to your brand that will draw in customers, generate word-of-mouth, and help give your brand value.

Why Does Your Branding Matter?

  • Branding will happen either intentionally or passively and it can happen quickly. It’s better to control the message before it’s uncontrollable or acquires an association that doesn’t align with your company’s goals. After all your brand is what the customer says it is.
  • Great branding can make it easier for employees to do their jobs. With a clear company message and personality, branding makes the job of the marketing and advertising teams easier by providing a backbone for their efforts.

As a small business, you may be competing against big brands with devoted customers. That’s why you have to find ways to differentiate–with a solid brand building process of your own. Branding is much more than just a cool logo or well-placed advertisement. You need to do more.

  1. Start small with your branding & remember to focus on your target audience first.
  2. Research your market and competition, then decide how you can convince a customer to purchase from you over them.
  3. Integrate your company’s tagline and mission statement to create a voice that resonates with your audience.
  4. Incorporate this voice and message into every aspect of your business and stay consistent.

If you are looking for help with your brand, then consult a company that knows how to ask the right questions and create the proper foundation. Wieting Design specializes in being able to get to the heart of your company and create a message and look that communicates the right impression to the right people. You deserve a brand that fits your company and showcases your strengths while capitalizing on your target audience.

Are you ready for a better brand to present to your customers and employees? Give us call at 203 414 9692 or email us, we would love to talk to you!

3 Reasons Why You Need a Responsive Navigation Menu

January 18, 2017 by Cindy Wieting

Brands are recognizing there’s no need for two separate websites. The trend now is to create a responsive website that will work seamlessly on any mobile device, tablet, laptop, or desktop screen and is designed to adjust to meet the user’s needs. But, In order to ensure that your mobile visitors’ aren’t frustrated while surfing your web pages, it is vital to provide them a fully-functional menu that is easy-to-use.

3 Reasons to Use a Mobile Responsive Navigation Menu

  1. Better Usability – Although smartphones have the ability to zoom by ‘pinching’ or the double-tap, as well as other functions to help browsing non-responsive websites, navigation and legibility can still be difficult. Mobile users are more likely to use sites that are designed for mobile use instead of those that simply display a desktop version on mobile devices.

  2. More Conversions – According to Moz, a leading SEO company, UK based eCommerce company Offspring saw an increase of over 15% in mobile conversions, accompanied by a year-on-year increase in mobile revenue of over 100%.

  3. SEO Benefits – Since 2015, Google has been encouraging developers and businesses to prioritize mobile versions of their sites. Since April 2015, Google announced that mobile friendly websites would rank better on mobile search results pages than websites that were not mobile-friendly. Now Google is adding another new algorithm change that prefers one responsive website for every type of platform.

Design is not full of rules, but rather guidelines for creating wonderful ideas. In web design these ideas need to be usable and easy to interpret on any screen. Your mobile responsive navigation menu should be easy to locate and understand, organized so users don’t have to search around for content, and look like a natural extension of your site’s desktop version. Nested levels of navigation are not always the best choice for a mobile website. With so many web users now visiting on smartphones and tablets, expecting them to use your old, desktop navigation is simply not a viable option.

How to Set Up your Facebook Business Page for Success

October 26, 2016 by Cindy Wieting

optimizing-your-facebook-business-pageRule #1 in business is to get in front of your market. As the largest social media site for small businesses, Facebook is still king. If you’ve been fighting the trend, you are missing out on a great opportunity. Three reasons you should have a Facebook business page is to connect with customers,  it is a free way to market your business, and it brings traffic to your website and store. Now you know why you need it…

Here’s how to set up and optimize your Facebook business page for success.

  1. Create your Facebook Business Page connected to your personal Facebook account.
  2. Choose which category you fit into out of the following:
    1. Local Business or Place
    2. Company, Organization, or Institution
    3. Brand or Product
    4. Artist, Band or Public Figure
    5. Entertainment
    6. Cause or Community
  3. Complete your business profile description in 150 characters or less so visitors know exactly who you are and what you do . Add categories that your business applies too like what type of food your restaurant serves or what services you offer, then finalize the profile with your business website link.
  4. Upload your profile picture. Your goal with your images is to draw viewers in and show off your brand. Be sure it’s a high resolution shot.
  5. Claim any duplicate pages. Facebook may have a user generated page about your business and during set-up they will prompt you to claim this page(s).
  6. Choose your audience. For example, if you’re a hair stylist in Wilton, CT your audience could be women ages 13-65 that are located in Wilton. You can also target based on people’s interests, but be careful narrowing your audience or your views will be limited.
  7. Setup a Cover Photo. This picture is different from your profile picture but is equally important as it’s the first big image of your brand viewers will see. Your cover photo should be 851 pixels by 315 pixels and visually show your services.
  8. Create a Call to Action. Choose a button to include on your page that prompts viewers to engage with you. I.e. Book Now, Contact Us, Shop Now.
  9. Create a posting strategy with compelling content. Start off slow and steady with a daily post. If you have a blog, pull snippets from your website and add images to your posts. Visuals and video get the most views.
  10. Invite your Friends to like your page.  It’s important to wait until you have a stream of content before going for likes. Once you have a few posts and images, go for the low hanging fruit first. Like your own page and then ask friends and family to also like your page.
  11. Advertise on Facebook. You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars a month, but consider starting with a small budget to grow your audience. When you are first starting out, it can be hard to gain an audience but once you’ve established 1-3K likes, you’ll start gaining more organically.
  12. Measure your Growth. Facebook has a built-in analytics tool to help you measure your growth and you can add a tracking code to your website to track how visitors are interacting with your website.

Creating a Facebook Business page is free and simple to do and with all of the benefits, it’s a no-brainer. Having a Facebook page also helps you with Google’s new local SEO ranking algorithm. One of the most important steps is to make sure your presence on Facebook is consistent and aligns with your brand. If you share a funny video that  gains new likes, but it doesn’t pertain to your brand, you’ve earned a like, but not a customer.
