What The Color Orange Says About Your Brand

August 30, 2017 by Cindy Wieting

Frank Sinatra once said “Orange is the happiest color.”

And 20 years ago, I knew I wanted orange in my branding. Orange is the color of enthusiasm and optimism. People whose favorite color is orange tend to be social by nature and a problem solver at heart. They channel energy to inspire and influence others, with a natural knack for team building. Others are drawn to orange simply because it’s bright, fun, and spunky. It’s my color, my personality, and entwined with who I am as a person and subsequently how I operate my business.

When I started using orange in my branding, it was rarely seen outside of big established brands. However, we’ve seen more and more companies choose orange and we wanted to cover how important color choices are for your business color palette.

How does color impact your brand?

#1 Color evokes emotion– Most of us have a favorite color or prefer some colors over others. This is because color can affect our moods so we surround ourselves in the colors that have a positive impact on our mood. Red boosts energy and yellow often makes us feel happy, combine the two and you have an orange happy energy. Color evokes an emotional response whether it invokes a memory, connects us to something we love, or even inspires us.  When you see an orange sunrise break above the trees and buildings, it inspires you to tackle a new day. When the sunsets in a blaze of fiery orange it makes you want to stop and take pause and appreciate it’s beauty. What feeling do you want your target audience to feel when they see your brand?

#2 Colors Communicate Invisibly  – By stopping to consider what each color represents and is linked to in the ‘real world’ we can make informed design decisions that ensure we appeal to our target markets. Orange is confidence, playfulness, cheerfulness, and success according to the psychology of color. It’s everything I want my clients to feel when they come to me with an idea. I want them to feel renewed and confident when we partner on projects. Without considering what our colors are communicating we run the risk of offending the very people were are designing for. But, remember, that it’s just one part of the process because there are no hard facts. It comes down to personal preference, experiences, upbringing, and cultural differences. What do you want your color scheme to communicate?

Color is a complex subject with many strands and it has the power to subliminally convey values and stories. Research has reinforced that 60% of the time people will decide if they are attracted or turned off to a message – based on color alone!

Color is one small detail that makes our life interesting and special.

Our minds are programmed to respond to color. For example, we stop our cars for red lights and go on green. Consider the effects of the colors in your branding, what message are they conveying and what feelings are invoked? Color is the visual component people remember most about a brand followed closely by shapes/symbols then numbers and finally words. It’s the feeling, mood, and image that your brand creates that play a role in persuasion. Be sure to recognize that colors only come into play when they can be used to match a brand’s desired personality

There are some great sites out there that produce beautiful palettes on a regular basis  and it’s easy to find something that’s already made. But if you want something that’s truly YOU, it helps to consult with an experienced branding expert and designer, that is willing to learn about you, and help you create branding this is colorful, makes a statement, and reflects who you are.

What Is Your Branding Saying About You and Why It Matters?

April 26, 2017 by Cindy Wieting

Have you ever heard a catchy slogan or jingle on the radio? I’m sure you can recall a flooring jingle or a plumber’s tune. These are examples of strong branding that creates recognition in your community. Branding also allows you to connect with your audience and advertising can be tailored to target your ideal customers. In a business climate where the Internet, social media, and technology create a lot of static, it’s crucial to develop a clear voice and message for your business to help cut through the noise. It also has to be memorable. Your brand is the focus of all your marketing efforts. People have too many choices and too little time; the last thing you want to do is follow the beaten path.

What Does Your Branding Say About Your Company?

  • What does your business do so well that a customer would choose you over your competitors, or even pay more for your product or service?
  • Do you have a great deal of experience in your industry?
  • Do you pride your company on an excellent customer experience?

These types of differentiating factors are building blocks to your brand that will draw in customers, generate word-of-mouth, and help give your brand value.

Why Does Your Branding Matter?

  • Branding will happen either intentionally or passively and it can happen quickly. It’s better to control the message before it’s uncontrollable or acquires an association that doesn’t align with your company’s goals. After all your brand is what the customer says it is.
  • Great branding can make it easier for employees to do their jobs. With a clear company message and personality, branding makes the job of the marketing and advertising teams easier by providing a backbone for their efforts.

As a small business, you may be competing against big brands with devoted customers. That’s why you have to find ways to differentiate–with a solid brand building process of your own. Branding is much more than just a cool logo or well-placed advertisement. You need to do more.

  1. Start small with your branding & remember to focus on your target audience first.
  2. Research your market and competition, then decide how you can convince a customer to purchase from you over them.
  3. Integrate your company’s tagline and mission statement to create a voice that resonates with your audience.
  4. Incorporate this voice and message into every aspect of your business and stay consistent.

If you are looking for help with your brand, then consult a company that knows how to ask the right questions and create the proper foundation. Wieting Design specializes in being able to get to the heart of your company and create a message and look that communicates the right impression to the right people. You deserve a brand that fits your company and showcases your strengths while capitalizing on your target audience.

How important is your logo?

April 23, 2014 by Cindy Wieting

A logo is the most important strategic marketing asset a company can have. It is a solid graphic mark that identifies you and only you. Your logo is everywhere; from your website, to your business card. Logos are there to identify, not to explain. Creating a logo whether it is simply a typography treatment or symbol is essential to your business. A logo and professionally-printed materials show that you are committed to both your business and to your clients. We get many calls from clients wanting a website and are willing to put dollars toward a good solid website but don’t really care about a logo or don’t understand the value. Do you know that a logo is quite possibly the most important strategic marketing asset a company can have.?

Creating a good solid logo takes time with many elements to consider. A well-designed logo can be as simple as beautiful typography, or a clean understood “icon”.  It does not have to be complex, in fact many companies are keeping it simple.

Here are some tips when thinking about a logo design:

  1. Don’t be wowed by a trendy graphic.  Remember a trend is what’s hip or popular at a certain point in time but in a year or two it will fade  and your logo will appear outdated.
  2. Once you have a logo, stick to it. While it may be tempting to change your logo every time a new ideas comes into your head this can be counterproductive. Building a brand name takes time and clients may see your constant logo changes as a lack of stability. Clients like consistancy.
  3. Keep the design of your logo clean and simple, your logo is like your personal billboard, you want someone to see it, read it and understand it in 5 seconds or less. It must be ledgible and clear to read.
  4. Something that looks great on your computer screen may not translate well when printed, it is important to have your designer take you through the process of selecting a PMS color to ensure the color will translate well.  Get print outs before you go to press, so you know what your getting before you spend dollars getting it printed. Always keep in mind that your logo will potentially be used in many different places. For example stationary, fax, newspaper ads, etc and it is essential it reads well across all platforms.

There are many other elements that should be considered when designing your logo, like a tag line explaining what you do.  For example if you are a interior designer your name might not be enough, you might want and should  consider adding “interior designer” so people know what you do.

A good, successful company logo will express the company’s image so that it transcends merely one product or service. Unless you can see into the future, most companies will shift and change as they grow, making it imperative that your brand identity is able to shift and grow with you. You want your logo to grow with you as well as any other printed materials you develop.

In general, your logo should embody the following key rules:

  • Fonts should be simple and easy to read.
  • Utilize simplistic graphics as attention-getting elements.
  • Find a color pallet to fit the feel of your company.
  • Use symbolic elements that portray simple ideas that are easy for a client to understand and remember.
  • Take into consideration your target audience.
