Website Design Checklist

October 16, 2018 by Cindy Wieting

It’s exciting to get a visitor to your website, but that’s just the beginning of the journey.

Websites must be well designed and functional, with a clear call to action in order to turn visitors into customers. That’s why your website design is important and below is a checklist of website essentials that will ensure you get the most out of your page. Use this checklist to help answer the question “What should my website include?”

Your website should have the following:

Your own style.

A website is an extension of your brand. It should match the style that defines your business and speaks best to your audience. (Note that you should have a clear understanding of your target market in order to make a meaningful connection with them.) Include a strong, defining design, but remove any excess noise and distractions that may prevent visitors from seeing the most important points such as your competitive edge and call to action.

A clear goal.

While your website should be appealing to the eye, good looks will only get you so far and your website is no exception. It’s more than just a collection of text and images; the site has purpose and everything on it must work together to help achieve this. Determine the goal of your website (this depends on type of business) – is it to drive traffic, generate leads, make a sale, build trust, be a resource of information, etc? You may have multiple goals, but be certain to define these objectives to ensure website success.

User friendly experience.

The journey through your website should be pleasant and engaging. Visitors typically scan sites quickly and within 5 seconds decide if they’ll stay or go, so make the site inviting and easy to read. Once your site passes the first impression test, visitors should be engaged in the content and geared towards the call to action. To ensure a good user experience, the site must be responsive to different platforms (computer, tablet, phone) with the ability to work correctly on various devices. Also make sure that all links, buttons, and forms work.

Easy navigation.

Your website should be informative with easy-to-find facts that explain the who, what, where, and how. Beyond that, have a logical roadmap that makes sense and leads visitors to where you want them to go. Put yourself in the client’s shoes to decide what you’re trying to accomplish and how to best get there. Offer the path of least resistance; have clear links to the most important pages and make navigation and searches simple. Remember that obstacles may deter clients from staying on the web page. Also have strategically placed buttons to put focus on your call to action.

Call(s) to action.

Don’t let the connection you’ve made with visitors on the website stop there. Turn your viewers into clients with a clear call to action (CTA). Depending on the type of business, decide what the CTA is: to buy, sign up, contact, visit, etc. Call attention to this CTA by making it visible with strategic placement that can increase lead conversions. Remember that even if your CTA includes a contact form, you should also include visible contact information throughout the site. In addition to the contact page, you can include contact info on the top and bottom of each page. Be certain to include multiple contact methods such as phone, email, and address. Reaching your business should be easy.

SEO for searchability.

To increase visitors, make sure that the website is search engine optimized. For a higher search engine ranking, use SEO best practices, targeted keywords, external and internal links, and post original and relevant content. Maintain visibility by keeping the site fresh and engaging. Remember that text from images cannot be searched, so make sure that important keywords are visible.

Content management system (CMS).

On the back-end, a great website allows for easy edits and updates. Trends are constantly changing and it’s important to keep up with these changes to stay relevant. To increase a website’s ranking, fresh content helps. Keep your website current with powerful client testimonials, current case studies, blog posts, etc, through the website’s CMS. Remember that successful marketing is an ongoing process, and not a set it and forget it one-time deal.

By following this website design checklist, you can ensure that you create a website with purpose. And that purpose is to bring you closer to your business goals.

Wieting Design offers custom solutions for websites with original designs, as well as WordPress and Squarespace themes to ensure the best option for your business needs and budget. By creating a new site or revamping an old one, we will do more than just create a pretty page. We give these pages the power to work for you as a sales tool that turns visitors into customers. We also offer database management, hosting packages, search engine optimization (SEO), content management systems, and analytics.

Wieting Design launches Trietta a Wilton based company

October 10, 2018 by Cindy Wieting

First I would like to thank Vernon Howard for his expertise in the development of this website!  Next I would like to thank Chris John Amorosino one of our awesome copywriters! Great job guys!

What we did for Trietta

The new website invites prospective clients to discover the benefits of working with Trietta. The website is integrated with a suite of services that fully explain Real Estate, Contracting and Real Estate Investment services. Visitors are invited to view Trietta’s project work and will have the opportunity to learn more about subjects like Home Inspections to help sellers and buyers.

We branded Trietta giving them a new look across all platforms, and will be handling the digital communications and online/offline marketing.  Trietta wanted a site that was easy to navigate giving the user a friendly experience. We custom designed this website using the photography that was shot on location and graphics we developed. Over time as Trietta grows we will be adding videos, and various ways to educate the user on all the services they have to offer. The open source content management system allows Trietta’s staff to easily update the website.

We invite to have a look at Trietta.

Hiring a Good Website Design Agency

May 28, 2016 by Cindy Wieting

hiring-a-good-website-design-companyMany times when we are talking to new clients there are always a few who have been mislead by a web designer with broken promises. I hear things like: “I gave a deposit and now they have disappeared” or “my website designer completed my site but it doesn’t work”. Cleaning up or trying to fix another designers/developers mistakes is not an easy task. Plus the fact you need to gain the clients trust back.  Our industry is a FIELD OF FALSE PROMISES AND UNORIGINAL CONTENT. These days “EVERYONE IS A WEBSITE DESIGNER or DEVELOPER. So you want to be sure your are hiring someone with experience, and a good track record. Here are some tips that will help you spot a bad web design company versus a good one.

What services do they offer besides website design?

If you go to Google and put in “Website Design Fairfield County CT” there will be a multitude of CT website design companies for you to choose from. When your planning a new website design or redesign, search for a company that offers a wide range of services to fully support your digital needs. For example: most new clients need a logo and collateral.  Hiring a one company to provide web design, graphic design, development and Inbound marketing services will help your business to stay organized. The company you hire will fully understand your goals, allowing your business to establish a more comprehensive, effective Internet presence.

Take a good look at their portfolio, look closely at their clients.

A good web design firm will have an online portfolio of completed sites. Their own site may be enticing, but it is more important to look inside.  If they offer custom website design make sure the sites they have completed are just that and not a standard pre-designed site.  Take a look at the team and read about them. Ask for references. Don’t settle for a generic recommendation—ask for specifics. Perform an online search — not just on a search engine, but also on LinkedIn relevant forums. Look for red flags, but take any individual data points you find with a grain of salt. Consistency is far more likely to be accurate.

If they want more then 50% up front RUN IN THE OTHER DIRECTION.

If they want more than 50% of the project cost up front, it’s in your best interest to keep looking. Typically we ask for 25% upfront, 25% when we go to programming and the remainder when the site is launched. If the company does not work with a contract, keep looking.  A contract is essential, as it protects both parties, outlines responsibilities, delivery timelines, quotes, out of pockets, and everything that you “both” can expect.

Is the price too good to be true? (the cheapest quote?)

Wow!  what a deal. $1,500.00 to design and develop a new website.  No, not really, and here’s why:

  • They have a full time job and are only designing websites to make some extra cash.  I can guarantee you that when you need support, they won’t be there for you. YOU WANT SOMEONE WHO DESIGNS WEBSITES FOR A LIVING.
  • They are inexperienced to the industry, don’t have a good solid track record, and simply don’t know what it “really” takes to fully design a website that will look good and function that way it should.
  • They will look for opportunities to up sell you on more expensive packages for SEO, Social Media, or Inbound marketing.
  • They are so desperate for work they will do anything to get it.

Make sure you can meet the people that are going to work from the designer to the developer.

You would be surprised with the number of agencies who outsource work. Outsourcing is popular these days, because the markup on the agencies side can mean big dollars for them, but the website could be built with flaws due to the people that are actually working on your site.  Outsourcing can turn out fine; however, outsourcing can create inconsistency in terms of timelines, talent, responsibilities, and language barriers.  Find out if the business you are interested in has a team in-house and find out how long they have been working together and on what projects. Many companies will post pictures of their team, but some will be overseas, or 3,000 miles away. So ask which of their team members will be working on your project and what are their qualifications? Think about the ongoing relationship before signing a contract.  Are you going to keep the developer on call if (when!) changes are needed?  You also need to get some assurances that the developer keeps the code clean and labeled properly, so someone else can easily work with the code.

So the bottom line is you may pay more for your new website then you thought, but it will be built right, you’ll get good custom service and the team your working with will be reliable. AS THE OLD SAYING GOES: YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

Give us call at 203 414 9692 or email us with questions we would be happy to talk with you.

3 Website Design Mistakes That Could Harm Your Brand Image

July 10, 2014 by Cindy Wieting

design

Whether you are in the process of having a website built or thinking about having an existing website re-designed. There are plenty of web design mistakes you will want to avoid. The following are three common mistakes that could ruin your company’s brand image.

 1. Inconsistent Corporate Identity

What does Amazon.com, Louis Vuitton and many other popular brands have in common? They are all consistent.  When your brand is consistent, it becomes more memorable in the mind of your customer. Regardless of whether you own a large corporation or small business, your brand should be consistent. Your website, logo design, online and offline advertisements, and print collateral should mirror each other. A company with an inconsistent brand will have a difficult time competing in the marketplace.

 2. Failure to Hire a Professional Web Designer

There are so many options available to business owners today that there is really no excuse not to have a website.  Unfortunately, not every option is the right choice. It can be tempting to hire an inexperienced freelance web designer that offers the best price in town or the web hosting company that offers DIY website builders (with free templates) at a low price. Both options may sound good on paper, but in reality, it will cost you in the long run. It can cost you more money to fix someone’s mistakes or cost you potential business.

A professional web designer will not just build an attractive looking website, he or she will build a website that is marketable and user-friendly.  A visitor is more likely to remain on a website if it is a breeze to navigate, visually appealing and offers something of value.  A professional web designer will not just take the latest trends into consideration when designing a website, he or she will take your target audience into consideration. The purpose of having a website is to have visitors land on your page and make an informed decision (i.e. buy, call, email, sign-up, register, etc.).  It’s a lot easier to accomplish your goals when your web design project is in the right hands.

 3. No Clear Call-to-Action

Many business owners struggle with this particular one. The scenario usually starts off the same. They have a well-designed website, a great product to offer and traffic. However, no one is buying.  If you don’t have a clear call-to-action, your visitors will not know what to do next. Your call-to-action should be obvious from the time a person lands on your web page.

Another mistake that many people make is providing too many options. When you provide people with too many choices – it causes confusion.  Having a clear and concise call-to-action will increase conversion ratings and even increase returning customers.

Hopefully, the above tips will help you avoid the three common mistakes that could potentially harm your brand.
