SEO or ADWORDS: Which One Should You Choose and Why?

March 30, 2018 by Cindy Wieting

The first step toward building digital presence of your company is creating a responsive website that caters the needs of your prospective clients. But what if your website name is not displayed in search engine results while a prospective client searches something relevant to what your company does!! A vital question pops-up here; is your website visible to the search engine? The answer and the solution of this problem is SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

What SEO Does

SEO is a holistic effort that helps your website to organically appear in top ranks of the SERPs or Search Engine Result Pages. Its prime targets are-

  • Making website more relevant to the possible customer search queries
  • Building popularity and authority of the website
  • Keeping the content relevant and up-to-date
  • Enhancing the website architecture so that it loads faster

The above mentioned practices of SEO yield result by-

  • Growing conversion rate
  • Increasing relevant traffic
  • Bypassing competitors
  • Building brand awareness and reputation
  • Streamlining other online marketing efforts like social media marketing, PPC etc.

What AdWords Does

AdWords is an extended global marketing platform, where you can promote your business products to get more clients and build brand awareness. AdWords is Google’s PPC or Pay-Per-Click service.

AdWords is the most popular PPC program that controls 90% of the search engine market. As Google holds lion’s share of the search engine market, advertising here is profitable as well as competitive too.

Here you can post your ads for free. Google charges you when someone clicks on your ads or you achieve conversion as per your preference. The term ‘conversion’ can be interpreted as sales, news-letter sign ups, app downloads, phone calls etc.

When a potential customer types a query that carries specific keywords relevant to your website or ad campaign, your ad appears at top of the organic SERPs. Ads will appear even when you are searching for similar products or services in the search engine.

 Where SEO and AdWords Differ

AdWords takes your marketing initiatives a step further from SEO. SEO relentlessly works on maintaining your web presence and increasing traffic volume. On the other hand, AdWords brings that audience toward your advertisement and increases its efficacy. Let’s elucidate how they differ-

  • SEO is nothing but a maintenance work which you must carry on in order to keep your website visible and understandable to the search engine. You can stop AdWords when you do not wish to continue it.
  • SEO takes time to produce visible results as multiple page-ranking factors work at different levels. It also takes considerable amount of time and money to synchronize those factors in right direction.
  • AdWords takes lesser time to produce result as it targets specific keywords and specific people. You can also use negative keywords to eliminate appearing your ads in wrong places.
  • AdWords allows your ads appearing on pre-set time slots that make it even more effective. It also good for seasonal businesses.
  • If done properly, AdWords works much faster than SEO in generating quality leads and conversion.
  • You can add Call to Action (CTO), call button and offers through AdWords, to lure potential customers.
  • AdWords allows you to launch multiple ad campaigns to attract customers from various directions.
  • SEO does not guarantee appearance of your website at the first page of the SERPs.
  • Like AdWords, organic search result is not paid but SEO needs long term investment to produce visible results.
  • As Google keeps changing its algorithm, if you stop doing SEO your website will start losing its visibility.
  • SEO takes time in pulling effective traffic to the website. Conversely, AdWords can start pulling traffic from the start of a campaign.

Why You Need Both SEO and AdWords

SEO is the prerequisite if you are looking forward to build a strong web presence and brand awareness. Alternatively, AdWords penetrates deeper and tries to build your brand reputation to the customers even to those, who are not aware of your company.

SEO continuously works towards building your website more accessible and user-friendly. It means, SEO to some extent, works constructing a good quality website that would satisfy the needs of a visitor redirected by the AdWords.

SEO builds reputation of a website by growing in-ward and out-ward links. It also finds competitive keywords to step aside your competitors. AdWords is ineffective if you fail to recognize the keywords that can work for your brand. Keyword research is integral part of both the practices. It is also effective if you are planning for social media marketing to narrow down your marketing efforts.

Conclusion

If SEO and AdWords work together, they can do wonders for your business. If you are a small business owner, you should start with SEO. You may advance toward AdWords when you have secured a strong customer base and have enough capital to invest in advertising. AdWords will help you if your target is spreading your brand awareness to a large number of people and increase customer base. Where, SEO will keep you floating in search engine.

SEO Basics: How SEO Can Be Helpful For Small Businesses

March 22, 2018 by Cindy Wieting

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a multilayered practice to enhance volume of quality traffic to your website. It is the first step toward digital marketing.

An SEO integrated online marketing strategy brings clarity and precision to your marketing efforts.

SEO has multiple variables which act at different layers together to bring out visible result. Basically, it tries to make your website appear in the first page of organic search results by increasing your page rank.

Many small business owners use SEO to achieve higher page rank in organic search results and avoid spending huge money on advertising.

What SEO Is All About

Well, SEO is not rocket science but it is not that uncomplicated either. I will try to make it less uncomplicated for you.

When we type anything in any search engine it replies us with numerous SERPs (search engine result pages). Websites appear one after another according to the level of their relevancy to the query typed in the search box. The website which appears at top of the organic search results gains the highest page rank. Organic search result is unpaid and comes after advertisements.

Improved page rank ensures enhanced traffic volume but are you actually getting the right kind of traffic? Are those visitors really interested in your product? Has search engine successfully identified you as who you are and what actually you sale?

It may happen that you sale red shoes but buyers who are searching for red dress or red bags often end up clicking on your website. The point of fact is you are not getting quality traffic. Only people who are searching for red shoes are your quality traffic.

When quality traffic clicks through your website it results in conversion (sales).

SEO is an all encompassing approach that tries to increases your website’s relevancy, usefulness, architecture and authority through improving and adjusting certain variables.

Which Search Engine Should I Zero On?

As we all know, Google is the most popular search engine in the world. According to the latest statistics of www.netmarketshare.com , it holds 74.06% of the market share. So, concentrating on Google would be enough for you. Microsoft’s Bing is the third most used search engine after Chinese search engine Baidu. Yahoo comes at the fourth place.

How Search Engines Work

Before indulging in how search engine optimization happens, you need to know how search engines create SERPs.

  • When someone types a query in the search box, automated robots, called ‘crawlers’, start finding out billions of relevant documents in the entire web. Bing’s crawler is called ‘Bingbot’.
  • Across the globe, search engines maintain various data centers, which store massive amount of data. These data storages help crawlers to bring information to search engine and create a web page index.
  • Using mathematical equations or algorithm search engines find out useful web pages in terms of their relevancy and popularity. According to algorithm the best pages with highest page rank appear in the first page.

Every search engine has its own algorithm that works differently from the others. Algorithms work on certain variables to determine page rank. These variables are called ‘rank factors’. Rank factors influence visibility of the web page.

If you are a small business owner, do not get agonized about those 200 odd rank factors, rather, you must know the fundamental factors of search engine optimization.

Building A SEO-friendly Website

Pillars of any SEO campaign-

  1. Relevancy– Relevancy is the key. Relevancy of any site can only be built through relevant and useful content; it must cater the need of your target audience.
  2. Popularity – There is no dearth of relevant pages in internet but search engines prefer websites, which have previously satisfied visitor’s requirement. Popular websites have following qualities-
  • Ability of attracting higher rate of visitors
  • The contents make the visitors spend considerable length of time on the pages and site
  • Ability to make the visitors pay repeat visit
  1. Authority- Authority of a website gets established when it-
  • Carries relatively huge number of incoming links
  • Gets mentioned in social media and important and influential websites (Government, education institutes, news organizations, industry websites etc.).
  1. Architecture- An SEO-friendly website is user-friendly, robust and fast for making a strong web presence. The content should be of high quality and must adhere to the demand of the potential buyers.

Why Should Small Businesses Think About SEO?

For small businesses, SEO is a less expensive alternative for building brand awareness among potential customers. Every small business goes through different hurdles, biggest among them are building trust and reputation. SEO can ease that a little for you .When your brand appears in the first page of reputed search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, people tend to start having trust in your brand. SEO can do the following things for your business-

  1. Drawing more customers
  2. Establishing brand awareness
  3. Beating competitors
  4. Increasing conversion rate
  5. Channelizing traffic for other online marketing campaigns

Basic SEO Factors For Small Businesses

For small businesses, required SEO is less complicated. SEO is done on three levels- i) On- site SEO, ii) Of-site, SEO iii) SEO and Negative SEO. Each part has its own set of variables.

ON-Site Optimization

  • Content Is The King- Any online marketing practice is incomplete without high quality content. If your content is relevant then search engines won’t recognize it. On the other hand, only a useful content is linkable and would generate repeat visitors.
  • Keyword Selection- Your keywords should be relevant to the words that the potential buyers are typing in the search box. If budget is constrained then keywords do not have to be very competitive for small businesses. The first 10 websites in the organic search result are your competitors.
  • Page Titles Should Be Relevant- Each page should have unique titles along with relevant keywords. The length of the title must be under 70 characters.
  • Meta Description- A 156 characters long meta description comprises of relevant keywords along with alluring calls to action. You can also add phone numbers or promotional offers.
  • Header Tags- If possible use <h1>, <h2>, <h3> header tags. These tags must have strategic and meaningful keywords in them.
  • URL- Your URL should be short and crisp containing rich keywords. Keywords always have to be relevant to the content and strategically placed. Avoid using symbols and numbers in page titles.
  • Easy To Crawl Website- In an easy-to-crawl website, search engine crawler or spider crawls easily. Crawler has to recognize on-site variables for further indexing.
  • Speed- Unless your website loads fast, the search engine won’t recognize it as user-friendly.

 Off-Page Optimization

  • Social Media- Do your website link appears in social media channels? When your website gets referred in social media and gets shared by popular individuals or organizations, they strengthen your reputation. Search engines will not ignore your website if you have strong reputation and popularity.
  • Backlinking- When reputed, trustworthy and high quality websites mention your website link, it reflects that you are getting good backlinks. Organic backlinking benefits both parties but reciprocal backlinking doesn’t. Backlinking is more beneficial when it comes from different types of quality websites.

At the initial stage, you can ask your family, friends, customers and suppliers to link your website to their social media platforms or in their own websites. You can also ask relevant bloggers to link.

  • Trust Issues- Your website appears trustworthy to the search engines when visitors pay you repeat visits and spend a good length of time.
  • Optimization of Anchor Text- The visible hyperlinked clickable text is anchor text. Branded and relevant anchor text easily catches the attention of the search engines. It is important that relevant anchor texts should appear naturally in your website.

Negative SEO

Negative SEO is an unethical practice where someone deliberately tries to drag down your page ranking. It is mostly done by off-page SEO, for example- building unnatural links or spam links, scraping content and hacking. However, there are controversies regarding its efficacy.

Conclusion

SEO does not reflect the result instantaneously to your page rank position but slowly with the rise of number of visitors, your rank will improve.

SEO does not bear fruit over night. The secret behind a successful SEO campaign is proper knowledge, well conceived strategy, considerable amount of time and money.

Everything You Need To Know for Google’s "Mobile First" Indexing.

February 9, 2017 by Cindy Wieting

From the moment we wake up in the morning, we’re checking our phones for the forecast, reading emails, checking our calendar and so on.  Mobile phones are an integral part of our daily routine and now Google wants to reward websites that consider mobile users first. Until now, Google has indexed web pages as desktop browsers see them. With the new ‘mobile first’ approach, Google indexes web pages as mobile phones see them. The rankings will be calculated based on the mobile websites. What does this mean for your website?

Here’s everything you need to know for Google’s Mobile Indexing:

Do you have a mobile site? – Mobile websites will be given preferential treatment; but, the desktop version of the crawlers will not be abandoned. It will still crawl your desktop version if you don’t have a mobile website. Please keep in mind that mobile optimized websites will get more visibility and traffic, so give us a call if you don’t have a mobile site.

Are you serving a separate mobile site? – Simplified mobile sites are not going to make the cut. You’ll need to make sure that your mobile website looks similar to your desktop website and that your mobile pages contain enough content to rank your pages. If your mobile pages have less content than your desktop pages, your pages might get lower rankings with Google’s new ‘mobile first’ index.

What about tabs, accordions, & expandable content? – Previously, compressing content into a read more link or hidden container resulted in that content not getting indexed by Google. With this ‘mobile first’ Index, things have changed. Expandable content makes much more sense on a mobile platform because of limited screen space and will now count count towards SEO.

Will Google keep the desktop indexing? – For now yes. However, all signs are pointing to Google moving towards one index, the Mobile Index.

What if I don’t have a separate mobile site? – Hopefully this means you’ve worked with a web design agency that created a mobile-responsive website design. This means you have one website site that adapts to whatever device it’s viewed on whether tablets, mobile phones, or a desktop browser. If you’re not sure, visit Google’s mobile-friendly test site or contact us for a free consult.

If you don’t have a dedicated mobile site or a responsive design, now is the time to get one. You won’t become invisible in the new mobile index, but you also won’t rank as well as you could have. Remember that these efforts are not just for indexing (SEO) purposes, but also for mobile users. The majority of users search on mobile.  Google is prioritizing mobile sites that make it easier for users to find what they’re actually looking for, and discover high quality, valuable content and resources.

If you’re not sure if your site is mobile friendly or optimized for the ‘mobile first’ index, give us a call for a free consultation at 203- 414-9692

The Costly Mistake of Hiring the Wrong SEO Company

July 22, 2014 by Cindy Wieting

SEOYou have a thriving online business, your traffic and sales are remarkable. You have an excellent product to offer and a well-designed website. Then one day it all comes to a standstill. Your traffic has dropped and you can’t understand why. You wonder if your website has been hit by Google’s latest Penguin update. The sad thing is – you have invested a lot of time and energy into your business.  It just doesn’t seem fair. This is a typical scenario of someone who has hired the wrong SEO consultant in CT. This mistake will not only cost you money to repair their mistakes, you can lose traffic, sales and profits. Here are a few important things to help avoid this common nightmare.

Check for Valid References.

Would you leave a newborn baby with a child care provider without checking his/her references? Of course not. Your business should be treated the same way. When it comes to hiring an SEO company, make sure you check their references.  If they refuse to provide you with their references – it’s time to move on.   A legitimate SEO company will have no problem with providing verifiable client references.

Don’t Rely Solely on SEO – Diversify.

Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket. Utilize other effective forms of marketing, such as email marketing, social media marketing and PPC advertising. This is an excellent way to build and maintain your client list and drive more traffic to your website or landing page.

 Conduct a Thorough Research

– Here are a few important things to ask your potential SEO consultant before signing the dotted line:

– Ask if they sell linkbuilding services. If their answer is: ‘yes’, you should flea like a bird. A reputable SEO company, in 2014, will not sell linkbuilding services. Google frowns upon paid for link services. You could run the risk of getting your website penalized.

– Ask about their content marketing strategy. Do they have one? A good content marketing strategy will include a team of experienced content writers, graphic designers and other content producers. Ask them to give you an example of a typical ROI for one of their clients. An experienced SEO company should be able to provide ROI metrics of at least one of their clients. This is usually a big selling point.  If they can provide one client that is closely related to your type of business – even better.

– Do they help build brands? Six years ago, Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO said: “Brands are the solution, not the problem…brands are how you sort out the cesspool.” This way of thinking still applies today. Google loves brands – small brands included.  They seem to focus more on brands that are relevant and brands that possess an authoritative voice.

Hopefully, the above tips has shed light on the costly mistake of hiring the wrong SEO company.
