6 Signs You Have Outgrown Your Website

March 19, 2021 by Cindy Wieting

Websites are never truly complete. You should always be adding to your website and tweaking the design and language to meet the needs of your customers. Without regular updates, you’ll fall behind the times and miss out on opportunities due to limitations in SEO, user experience and load speeds.

Each day, website trends adapt and change. You need to constantly evaluate your website to see if it’s adapting and changing with the trends. If not, you’ve likely outgrown your website and it’s time for a new website design.

For many business owners and marketing managers, undertaking a website project doesn’t sound like fun. So you want to make sure it’s time before embarking on such a project. We outline ways you can tell you’ve outgrown your website.

Your Website Design Embarrasses You

When you share your website, does it come with caveats of you saying things like “here’s my website, but it’s a little outdated.” Or do you find ways around sharing your website by guiding people to a Facebook page, Medium article or another third-party resource?

This is a big red flag that it’s time for a new website. As your business grows and changes, you want to make sure the look, tone and functionality of your website adapt and grow with you.

You should never be ashamed of your website. In fact, it’s your greatest marketing tool and the resource that most marketing activity points to. Upgrade your website if you’re ashamed of it or make excuses for why it looks or sounds a certain way.

You Don’t Know How Your Website Works

There are so many tools on the market today that make website management simple. If your current website’s operations are a total mystery to you, you’re likely avoiding updates and upgrades to that site. Fix this problem with an update to a WordPress website or other easy-to-use platform.

Outdated websites are also a huge security risk. You could become a victim of hacking, phishing or other security concerns. And if you collect customer information through your website, that could leave your customers vulnerable. One data breach could put your company out of business.

Take the time to discuss with a website designer an easier process for website updates. That way, you ensure the long-term viability of your site and protect your company’s online identity.

Your Website Features Old Branding and Messaging

Many businesses go through an evolution of how they talk about themselves and their overall look and design. To keep your visual identity consistent, you need to make sure your website matches your current branding standards.

If your website features an old logo, colors or design elements, it’s time for an update. And while you’re updating to a new look, you can upgrade your tools to make your website simpler to manage.

Your Competitors Are Using the Same Templates and Design

Some templates and designs become quite popular within an industry. While your website might have been unique a few years ago when you got started, today it looks just like everyone else’s website.

Popular WordPress themes can make your website feel stale. It won’t stand out among your competitors or be memorable to your customers, enticing them to come back.

While the theme you chose for your website might be attractive and function well, don’t forget to consider how well it portrays your brand and what makes you unique. Market differentiators should jump off the page and make it clear that your consumers should not shop anywhere else to meet their needs.

Professional website design gives you a custom website that helps you stand out and clearly communicate with your customers. You won’t find another website like yours on the web when you work with these professionals.

Mobile Optimization is Lacking on Your Site

Mobile website traffic grows each year. In 2013, the worldwide percent of mobile users was only 16.2 percent of total website traffic. By 2019, that percentage had skyrocketed to 53.3 percent.

It’s no big surprise that Google puts so much weight on mobile optimization when ranking websites. If your website doesn’t look great or is not easy to navigate from a mobile device, it’s certainly time you update it.

According to research, 54 percent of customers indicate that they won’t recommend a business with a poor mobile website design. Referrals and recommendations mean a lot in today’s connected and social online environment.

When evaluating your mobile website, don’t forget to think about its speed. Slow websites harm conversion rates immensely, but website speed also impacts search engine rankings and your relationships with your customers.

Use Google PageSpeed Insights to learn more about your website’s performance to evaluate if it’s time for an update.

Lack of Modern Website Technology is Holding You Back

An outdated website generally has slow load speeds, limited functionality and makes it challenging to rank well for SEO. If it seems like you’re working extremely hard and have a good online strategy but you aren’t seeing results, it’s time to modernize your website.

Review your Google Analytics for big changes from when you first launched your website. If you’re seeing valleys of low traffic from sources that had always served you well, it might not be your marketing efforts that are lacking, but your website.

Websites from just a few years ago might run on outdated templates, technology or formats that hold them back based on today’s standards. Heavy CSS files, weighty JavaScript and poorly optimized images and videos can do a great deal of harm to your traffic and website performance.

Captivate Your Audience with Modern Website Design Services

When a user lands on your site, you have only a few seconds to captivate them with your design and messaging. Don’t miss out on opportunities due to a website you’ve outgrown or that has become outdated.

Wieting Design provides outstanding website design services to delight your customers and earn more business through your online presence. Contact us to learn more about how we can improve your online presence with an updated and modern website design.

How to Promote Your Business During Holidays

November 30, 2018 by Cindy Wieting

It’s the most wonderful time of the year with lots of cheer, family, friends, love, and business promotions. November comes around and it seems like it may as well be December 25th with so many businesses in full-on holiday mode. While it may seem overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. Take advantage of the season by getting into the spirit and learning how you can master the art of seasonal promotions yourself (note: no carols required, unless of course your clients love them).

Here are tips for advertising during the holidays without overdoing it or getting lost in all the noise:

1. Get in the holiday spirit and incorporate holiday themes and holiday related content into your marketing strategy on and off the web. By incorporating what’s currently relevant, you can increase customer engagement and even improve your SEO. When choosing a holiday theme (traditional, nostalgic, comedic, etc), remember to stay true to your brand and values; your audience will recognize and appreciate the authenticity.

2. Be consistent with visuals and messaging. Whichever theme you choose, be certain to maintain consistency across every touchpoint; from your website and email campaign, to your social media (Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter) and any printed material for the season. The details matter and by maintaining consistency, you’ll increase your chances of becoming recognizable and memorable to clients. View our graphic design services.

3. Be creative yet targeted. Your holiday promotion doesn’t have to be loud and in your client’s face; it just needs to make a connection and can be more subtle if that’s what your clients respond to best. Try a holiday video or send a customized email. Show clients that you care for them and the community. It’s a time of giving so you can start by giving, too; this can be done by donating to a charitable cause and inviting the community to join, or offering a giveaway or discount to clients for a limited time.

4. Timing is important for the start of your seasonal advertising and end. Start too early and you may annoy, but start too late and your competitors may have already connected with your clients. Don’t just promote during holiday week; take advantage of the entire month of December. Also keep shipping deadlines in mind if relevant. For any holiday specials being offered, be certain to communicate a clear end date to create a sense of urgency so that clients take action as soon as possible.

5. Above all, know your audience and goals. Before proceeding with any marketing initiatives, you must first understand your clients, their needs, and what it is you’re looking to achieve in your promotional efforts. In anything you do, keep your call to action clear; this may be to contact you, make a purchase, visit your location, etc. Keep up with changing dynamics as well, for example remember Generation Z and Millenials make up a large portion of holiday sales, and they’re highly influenced by social media.

Whether you’re looking to connect with existing clients, gain new leads, improve brand recognition, or more – holiday promotions are a great way to get noticed and make a connection with your target market. Many of the tactics listed above can be incorporated into other holiday promotions for the future, and our team at Wieting Design a full service graphic and website design agency in Fairfield County, CT (Connecticut), can help. Website Design Checklist

October 16, 2018 by Cindy Wieting

It’s exciting to get a visitor to your website, but that’s just the beginning of the journey.

Websites must be well designed and functional, with a clear call to action in order to turn visitors into customers. That’s why your website design is important and below is a checklist of website essentials that will ensure you get the most out of your page. Use this checklist to help answer the question “What should my website include?”

Your website should have the following:

Your own style.

A website is an extension of your brand. It should match the style that defines your business and speaks best to your audience. (Note that you should have a clear understanding of your target market in order to make a meaningful connection with them.) Include a strong, defining design, but remove any excess noise and distractions that may prevent visitors from seeing the most important points such as your competitive edge and call to action.

A clear goal.

While your website should be appealing to the eye, good looks will only get you so far and your website is no exception. It’s more than just a collection of text and images; the site has purpose and everything on it must work together to help achieve this. Determine the goal of your website (this depends on type of business) – is it to drive traffic, generate leads, make a sale, build trust, be a resource of information, etc? You may have multiple goals, but be certain to define these objectives to ensure website success.

User friendly experience.

The journey through your website should be pleasant and engaging. Visitors typically scan sites quickly and within 5 seconds decide if they’ll stay or go, so make the site inviting and easy to read. Once your site passes the first impression test, visitors should be engaged in the content and geared towards the call to action. To ensure a good user experience, the site must be responsive to different platforms (computer, tablet, phone) with the ability to work correctly on various devices. Also make sure that all links, buttons, and forms work.

Easy navigation.

Your website should be informative with easy-to-find facts that explain the who, what, where, and how. Beyond that, have a logical roadmap that makes sense and leads visitors to where you want them to go. Put yourself in the client’s shoes to decide what you’re trying to accomplish and how to best get there. Offer the path of least resistance; have clear links to the most important pages and make navigation and searches simple. Remember that obstacles may deter clients from staying on the web page. Also have strategically placed buttons to put focus on your call to action.

Call(s) to action.

Don’t let the connection you’ve made with visitors on the website stop there. Turn your viewers into clients with a clear call to action (CTA). Depending on the type of business, decide what the CTA is: to buy, sign up, contact, visit, etc. Call attention to this CTA by making it visible with strategic placement that can increase lead conversions. Remember that even if your CTA includes a contact form, you should also include visible contact information throughout the site. In addition to the contact page, you can include contact info on the top and bottom of each page. Be certain to include multiple contact methods such as phone, email, and address. Reaching your business should be easy.

SEO for searchability.

To increase visitors, make sure that the website is search engine optimized. For a higher search engine ranking, use SEO best practices, targeted keywords, external and internal links, and post original and relevant content. Maintain visibility by keeping the site fresh and engaging. Remember that text from images cannot be searched, so make sure that important keywords are visible.

Content management system (CMS).

On the back-end, a great website allows for easy edits and updates. Trends are constantly changing and it’s important to keep up with these changes to stay relevant. To increase a website’s ranking, fresh content helps. Keep your website current with powerful client testimonials, current case studies, blog posts, etc, through the website’s CMS. Remember that successful marketing is an ongoing process, and not a set it and forget it one-time deal.

By following this website design checklist, you can ensure that you create a website with purpose. And that purpose is to bring you closer to your business goals.

Wieting Design offers custom solutions for websites with original designs, as well as WordPress and Squarespace themes to ensure the best option for your business needs and budget. By creating a new site or revamping an old one, we will do more than just create a pretty page. We give these pages the power to work for you as a sales tool that turns visitors into customers. We also offer database management, hosting packages, search engine optimization (SEO), content management systems, and analytics.

Website Design Hartford, CT

July 14, 2015 by Cindy Wieting

Website Design Hartford, CT

Over the past few years, many new businesses have opened up in Hartford,CT. The website designer you choose will help to play an important role in the eventual success of your company.  As you may already know, consumers often base their final decision on whether to do business with a company by how easy that company’s website is easy to navigate.  The easier it is the more likely the visitor is to take action (buy, call, email, subscribe or signup). If you own a business in Hartford, CT and you’re in the market for a new website designer, here are few important things to consider first.

Experience

Make sure your prospective web designer is up to industry standards when it comes to web design and development. A designer should be able to create a website that is aesthetically pleasing to mobile users (mobile-friendly) as well as desktop users.

If you’re hiring a design team, find out who will be designing your website. Is there an experienced web design team in place or is it a one man/woman operation?

A well-structured team should consist of the following components:

  • Project manager
  • Web designer to design the interface
  • Web developer to code the website
  • Online marketing consultant

Custom Design or Templates

A custom built website design is built from scratch. The main advantage of a custom built website is that your site will stand out from your competitors – this is important for branding.  With a template, there could be hundreds of other websites with a similar design. If your desire is to have a custom built website, make sure you confirm that your website will be built as such. There have been many instances where a consumer expected to have a custom built website only to discover (at the last minute) that the designer used a template instead of building a website from the ground floor up.

Another important aspect of web design is graphic design.

• Does your prospective web design company provide custom graphic design services?
• Graphic design plays a very important role in your company’s brand image.
• A good graphic designer will create a design that will set you apart from your competition.

At Wieting Design, all our websites are custom designed and developed in Wordpress.  Take a look

Culture

Does your web designer fit into your company’s culture? Does he/she have the same beliefs, values and attitude? A good web designer in Hartford, CT will consider your needs as well as the needs of your web users. He/she will also possess good business acumen and good customer service. Most of all, a good designer is a good listener – this is an important part of business etiquette and helps to ensure the end result is exactly what you originally had in mind.

Research

Make sure you do a little research before making a final decision on who to hire. Browse through at least 2-3 website designs. Compare the designer’s work and the services he/she provides. It is also a good idea to test out, from your wireless phone or tablet, the websites they have created,  to make sure their designs are mobile-friendly and what you have in mind for the look and feel of your website.

Portfolio

Every web designer has his/her own unique level of creativity – no two designers are alike.  Before hiring a designer make sure you review his/her portfolio. Ask for examples of websites that they have designed that are similar to the type of website you would like to have built. An experienced designer should be able to send you verifiable links to websites he/she has previously created.

Online Marketing

Once your website is complete, the next important step is to drive traffic to your website. Most web design companies provide both web design and online marketing under one umbrella. For example, at Wieting Design, we provide web design, graphic design and a variety of marketing services that range from SEO to social media marketing and more. View our additional online marketing services.

Reviews

Consumers tend to base their buying decisions on two things: word-of-mouth and online reviews. If the web designer has a number of negative reviews, consider that a warning sign to potentially avoid him/her. Make sure you read the company’s reviews before making your final decision. If you know other businesses in Hartford, CT who used a web designer, ask them for a referral.

Last but not least, make sure you get a ‘signed’ contract/agreement from the web designer prior to starting a project. Often times, many business owners are so anxious to get a website up and running, that they will sign the contract without getting a copy of the designer’s signature. Also, don’t forget to ask for a project schedule to help you stay on top of the progress being made on the development of your new website.

Give us a call or stop by and check out our website design work, graphic design work and our branding, we would love to hear from you!
